Peter Tshisevhe

Executive Chairman | Head of Mergers and Acquisitions

Practical Experience

Few names carry as much weight in South Africa’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal landscape as Peter Tshisevhe. As one of the country’s leading M&A attorneys and the executive Chairman of TGR Attorneys, Peter has carved a distinguished career defined by excellence, resilience, and purpose, all while remaining deeply committed to empowering others.

In 2011, Peter co-founded TGR Attorneys, a boutique commercial law firm specialising in Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate and Commercial Law, Banking and Finance, Commercial Litigation, Competition Law, and Real Estate. Over the past decade and a half, the firm has grown remarkably, reflecting his leadership and vision. Guided by what he calls the “lion pride model,” every member of his team contributes their unique expertise toward collective success.

Peter is a distinguished legal professional with over two decades of experience in corporate and commercial law, specialising in M&A, corporate finance, and commercial transactions and broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE). Peter advises listed entities on high-level transactions some of which have set pioneering legal precedent on complex company law disputes and has publicly commented extensively on the correct approach and implementation of the B-BBEE transactions.

The decision to specialise in M&A was both personal and purposeful. During apartheid, black lawyers were largely confined to limited areas of law, while commercial law which is the backbone of economic empowerment remained out of reach. Peter’s success can be attributed to his intellect, attention to detail, ability to manage complexity, and a deep understanding of his chosen areas of practice.

Peter regularly advises major corporations, state-owned entities, and financial institutions on deal structuring, funding arrangements, and regulatory compliance. His extensive experience spans across sectors such as energy, mining, manufacturing, and financial services. He has also played a meaningful role in public policy, serving on a government task team mandated to review the Mining Charter and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA).

Peter is passionate about legal education and transformation of the legal profession. He lectured part-time at the University of the Witwatersrand for over a decade, contributing to the development of future professionals. Peter regularly speaks on a number of topics including the correct implementation of B-BBEE policies, corporate governance and directors’ duties.  Peter is forthright about South Africa’s future, warning against fronting, patronage, and token empowerment, and advocating instead for structural reform and genuine inclusion.
